Bhopal Tourism
The capital city of the
state of Madhya Pradesh, Bhopal is referred as the City of Lakes because of
the two Taj-ul-Masjid beautiful lakes that are situated in the center of the
city. Legendary King Bhoj built this town in 11th century AD. The present-day
city was founded by an Afghan soldier Dost Mohammad Khan in 1723 after the decline
of the Mughal empire with the death of Aurangzeb. Apart from its natural beauty,
Bhopal is also famous for its mosques. The Taj-ul-Masjid in Bhopal is the largest
mosque of India.
Orchha is famous for its palaces and temples built in the 17th and 18th century.
Mosques
There are a number of important mosques, but the most revered is the Taj-ul-Masjid,
which is the largest mosque in India. The Jama Masjid and the Moti Masjid of
Bhopal are other important mosques built by the local Begums in the 19th century.
Shaukat Mahal and Sadar Manzil, located in the chowk area, in the heart of the
old walled city, are other important tourist attractions.
Tribal Habitat
Contemporary tribal cultures in various states of india are depicted in an open-air
exhibition. The tribal habitat is a presentation of actual size dwellings typical
of tribal house types. Architectural features are presented with elaborately
displayed interiors with the matching surroundings reconstructed to match some
of the interesting environmental features of tribal villages.
Museums
State Archaeological Museum is located near the lower lake and has on display
a small collection of 6th century Hindu Sculptures, bronzes, prehistoric exhibits.
Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalay is a 40-hectare complex in the hills, where an attempt
has been made to disseminate information about the life and culture of the tribals.
Bharat Bhawan, designed by Charles Correa is a center, which attempts to showcase
and encourage verbal, visual and performing arts. Birla Museum has an excellent
albeit small collection of well displayed rare sculptures (7th - 12th century)
in the Shiva, Vishnu and Devi galleries.
The Sanchi
The Sanchi Stupa 48 kms from Bhopal is a world heritage monument and one of
the world's most important Buddhist pilgrim centers. The construction of the
stupa began during the rule of Emperor Ashoka. The 4 gateways of the stupa are
exquisitely carved and recount the life of Gautam Buddha.
Bhimbetka
The Bhimbetka caves are at a distance of 40km from Bhopal. There are over 500 caves which have paintings done by the pre-historic man. Almost 700rock shelters belonging to the Neolithic age have been recently discovered.
Climate
The climate is monsoonal, with much of the rain falling from June to October. The March-to-May season is hot and dry, and temperatures everywhere are higher than 29º C. Winters are usually pleasant and dry.
